Day 33: Mannerheim's Manor + Naantali

Vikke the model

In Louhisaari, we visited the cemetery where members of the Mannerheim family were buried.

In front of the Louhisaari manor, where Mannerheim (former president of Finland and a Marshal in the army) was born. Unfortunately, this photo is so dark because it was so bright outside. The manor itself was built by the Fleming family. It is said that the last rich Fleming had such a beautiful wife, that he always locked her away in the attic whenever he went on business trips or whenever other men visited the manor. One day, he left on a business trip and forgot to notify his servants that his wife was locked in the attic, and thus, they forgot to bring her food and water. When Fleming came back, he discovered an irreparable error: his wife's body decaying in the attic. Today, the ghost of Fleming's wife still haunts the manor! Spooky.

Fascinating and intricate ceiling pattern

From Louhisaari, we drove to Naantali, a tourist-y seaside destination famous for being the home of Muumi maailma and Kultaranta, the President of Finland's summer residence. Unfortunately for us, Kultaranta was closed off to visitors that day because the President of Finland was currently vacationing there! How cool that I was able to breathe the same air as such an important political figure.

Yum

The entrance to Muumi Maailma (Muumi World). Although it was interesting to visit the cornerstone of all things Muumi, we did not go in because we were slightly too old to enjoy park's offerings (it's targeted at kids from the ages of 3 to 8.)

Inside the Muumi Forest

Naantali bears some resemblance to Rauma, especially in regards to the wooden buildings.
